Interview with Naomi Gibson

1: What is your most recent book about?

Game Over Girl is about a girl with a dark secret who plays a VR game, and her secret unravels inside of her game world. It’s a dark psychological thriller and I’m so proud of it!

2: Both of your books are centered around technology and AI, why? Does this topic have any significance to you?

I love exploring the relationship between humans and technology. I’ve always been interested in tech and I’m fascinated by people, so it makes sense in my head to mash them together.

3: What is the weirdest or most interesting thing you had to research for your book?

Most recently I’ve been googling CIA black sites and stages of growth for human spines. I’m definitely on a watchlist somewhere!

4: Which one of your characters was the hardest to write?

I find antagonists the most difficult because I like to make them three-dimensional, so we explore why they become antagonists, and that mostly comes out in editing for me. In my first drafts they’re usually quite one dimensional simply because I need them to do certain things and it’s not explained why until much later drafts.

5: If you were stranded on a desert island what 2 books, 2 movies and 2 animals would you bring?

Oh wow, tough question! 2 books: The Binding and The Whispering Dark which I read recently and loooved. 2 movies: Jumanji (the remake – I have a weird obsession with it!) and The Talented Mr Ripley. 2 animals: I don’t actually have any pets so can I take my husband instead? Haha.
