Interview with Cynthia Murphy

What is your next book about?

THE MIDNIGHT GAME is about a group of six teenagers who meet on the internet. They all love spooky stories and creepy pasta and decide they want to meet up in real life to summon The Midnight Man…only they don’t know if he’s real or not.And not everyone is 100% honest about why they are there…

Where did the idea for your next book come from?
I love folklore – those stories that are ancient and get passed down through generations by word of mouth. I also grew up just as the internet was becoming accessible for everyone, so the fact that folklore and the internet have mashed together to form creepy pasta stories like Slender Man fascinates me. The Midnight Game is something I found while doing a deep dive on creepy pasta and, like most of the other tales, I just can’t decide if they’re real or not. I certainly wouldn’t play but it’s been fun to let my characters do it!

What is the weirdest or most interesting thing you had to research for your book?

Where do I begin! For LOTD it was Victorian brooches made from human hair, WLKD was cults and poison and TMG has been Google searches like ‘where to stab someone in the ribs’.

What is the worst thing you ever did (or considered doing) to one of your characters?

Oh dear…I’m afraid I’ve done quite a lot of horrible things to my characters. It’s hard to give away without spoilers, but an awful lot of them seem to end up dead.

If you were stranded on a desert island what 2 books, 2 movies and 2 animals would you bring?

For animals, I would bring my dog, Loli, for sure. She’s a three year old rescue dog from Romania and is the cutest dog ever, even though we have no idea what breed she is. She would cuddle me at night and help me search for food. I’d also bring a chicken that I could look after to provide me with eggs and feathers that I could turn into writing quills.

Two books is hard! I think I’d have to bring one that I could read over and over, so maybe The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, as it’s an old favourite. I’d also take a book that told me how to look for plants to eat, some kind of desert island survival guide.

Two movies is tough too! One would have to be funny, so maybe Clueless or Old School. I’d have to take my all-time favourite horror too, which is the original Scream (or maybe The Craft, so I could summon Manon and get off the island…)
