The Tree That Sang To Me is a really sweet and heartwarming verse novel. It follows Kai, whose sister just left home. It’s his fault that she left and he will never tell that secret to anyone. The only place he can escape from this burning secret and worries is in his tree. When his safe space is breached by a girl, he fears the worst. But as time goes on, he and Sky form an unexpected friendship in the high branches of their tree.
Kai’s story shows his worry, fear, sadness and anger. It shows how he blames himself for his sister leaving. But it also shows the other side of the story: his friendships, his bond with his sister, Jen, and what really happened that made Jen leave.
This book covers its heavier topics in a comforting and easy to digest way. I loved The Tree That Sang To Me. It has amazing characters and a great plot. I read this book in one sitting and it gave me just as much happiness as Wider Than The Sea did (Serena Molloy’s first book and one of my favorites from last year).
I would recommend this wonderful, Middle Grade verse novel to anyone 9+. The dyslexia friendly writing and beautiful illustrations throughout the book make it inviting and fun to read.
