Interview With Kate S. Martin

  • What is your book about?

Are you Okay, Elliot Hart? Is about two teenage boys. Elliot Hart is a young carer and a shy boy. Josh McBride is an angry school bully. In the book they end up travelling to the city and there’s a few surprises for them.

  • Where did the idea for your book come from?

Elliot Hart came about because I wanted to show the struggles teenage young carers go through. Josh McBride came about to explore the reasons why teenagers bully. Ultimately, I wanted to encourage readers to be kind to each other because you never know what someone is going through.

  • Which one of your characters was the hardest to write?

I actually enjoyed writing from both Elliot’s and Josh’s perspective. Elliot is thoughtful and sensitive wheres Josh is very angry with the world. I found both of them very therapeutic!

  • What are your book or movie recommendations for people who have read and enjoyed your book?

I like gritty Young Adult books. Ones that tackle tough themes and encourage their readers to think about others. Recent ones that I’ve loved are Boy Like Me by Simon James Green and The Eternal Return of Clara Hart by Louise Finch.

  • If you were stranded on a desert island what 2 books, 2 movies and 2 animals would you bring?

Great question! 2 books: I have a huge pile of books waiting to be read so it would be the two at the top! The Haunting of Tyrese Walker by J P Rose and This Book Kills by Ravena Guron. 2 movies: Dirty Dancing always makes me smile and something more inspirational like Good Will Hunting. 2 animals: Jessie my dog. She’s a miniature schnauzer and I love her! My brother has just got a puppy and I’m very jealous so I’d steal him too!
