Interview with Ann Sei Lin

1: What is your book about?

Rebel Skies is about a young girl called Kurara who lives as a servant on a floating restaurant in a Japanese inspired steampunk world. Kurara has the ability to control paper – a power feared and respected by the empire.

When her home is attacked by a giant origami dragon, her best friend is injured. In order to save him, Kurara joins a skyship and travels to the sky city for help. In doing so, she learns a lot more about these origami beasts, her paper magic, and herself too.

2: What is the worst thing you ever did (or considered doing) to one of your characters?

The worst thing I’ve done to a character is a spoiler, but I can tell you the worst thing I considered doing!

In the early chapters of Rebel Skies Haru was going to be injured with the possibility of permanent damage. Of course, that never happened in the end, although I suppose you could argue that what actually happens to him in early chapters is far worse!

3: What is your favorite genre of books to read?

Fantasy! I’m an avid fantasy reader. I read all genres but I have a special place in my heart for the way fantasy makes me feel like being whisked away to another world.

4: What is your favorite Studio Ghibli film?

Tough question, but it has to be either Castle in the Sky or Princess Mononoke. Rebel Skies has a lot of Castle in the Sky vibes, so I might go with that.

5: If you were stranded on a desert island what 2 books, 2 movies and 2 animals would you bring?

Only two books? That’s tough! Maybe Elizabeth Lim’s The Dragon’s Promise and Morgan Owen’s The Girl With No Soul.

As for movies … I can’t cheat and name TV series, can I? In that case, my two movies would be Your Name and Castle in the Sky! I highly recommend both if you haven’t seen them!

If this was the world of Rebel Skies, I’d just bring an origami dragon with me, but in this case my two animals would probably be a dog and a chicken.  I’d bring a dog for protection and a chicken for its eggs!
