Digging For Victory is a verse novel set in World War II. It follows Bonnie, a twelve year old girl determined to make an impact on the war effort. After her brother is sent to war and reported missing in action she looses hope in ever becoming a hero, but she must figure out what the stranger staying in her house is doing. She has an increasing suspicion that he is a shirker or even worse, a German spy.
Digging For Victory is impossible to put down. It has a unique layout with words swilling around the page or written in different fonts. It is very enjoyable to read. Bonnie’s thoughts and emotions are interesting to read as she struggles through loneliness, grief and while uncovering the mysteries behind the strange Mr Fisher staying with her.
This book highlights the dangerous jobs of some of the unspoken heroes during WWII. This book also gives the reader a closer insight on what the war effort was like in smaller villages. This book is a great middle grade book that I would recommend to kids learning about WWII.
Thank you so much for your great review and your wonderful depiction of Bonnie and Bobbie! I’m so glad that you enjoyed ‘Digging for Victory’.
