The Midnight Clock by Jamie Costello

The Midnight Clock follows Millie. Her parents are divorced and she struggling to come to terms with the new challenges it brings. She’s living with her dad and his new girlfriend in a building which used to be the most famous prison in the UK. The only thing remaining from that time is an old clock in the hall. When the long dead clock begins to strike at midnight, Millie meets a young woman in the prison. Now transported to 1955, Millie realises she may be the key to saving Annie, a girl who’s been dead for 68 years.

The Midnight Clock is really fast paced, it is full of suspense and tension. It has a great mystery with a lot of unexpected twists. I loved learning about the time travel aspect of this book. It was really interesting to learn about how it worked and its limits. It was also cool to see how the real world changed everyday Millie was in the past.

I also loved the characters in The Midnight Clock. Millie cares so much about Annie and her family even though they were all dead in her time. The lengths Millie went to help Annie was really sweet to read about. I loved seeing her relationship with Annie’s brother develop through the book as they uncovered more secrets.

The Midnight Clock has a great ending. It’s bittersweet and a really nice way to end the book. The Midnight Clock is the perfect Young Adult book for anyone who enjoys history or time travel books.
