Old Wounds by Logan-Ashley Kinser

Old Wounds follows two trans teens – Erin and Max – who’ve run from their home town in Ohio. After issues with their car, they’ve ended in a small, isolated town. The locals plan to sacrifice one of them to an old monster who only eats girls. With their dreams of California put on hold, Erin and Max need to escape the monster and the seemingly never-ending night.

I loved Old Wounds. It is super creepy with lots of suspense and tension. I finished this book in only a couple days and was a little disappointed when I reached the end because I couldn’t read more.

Old Wounds goes into a lot of detail about Erin and Max, especially their trans identities. The book talks about their struggles with their identities and difficulties being accepted for who they are. There was a lot of transphobia towards Max, Erin and other people mentioned in the book. This helped to bring awareness to some of the awful things that trans people have to go through each day.

It was also really interesting to read about how Max and Erin’s stories are alike even though they both see themselves as being on a completely different journey. Their complicated relationship gave a lot of insight into who they were as people and how much they both cared for each other. I really liked seeing how they grew closer as friends as the book went on.

Even with the serious topics Old Wounds covers, it still has humor and action.  The monster in this book is pretty terrifying and I loved how unpredictable it was every time it appeared. I also really liked the mystery surrounding the monster and how Max and Erin were able to piece it together. I would recommend this for readers 13+.
