A Flash Of Neon by Sophie Cameron

Neon is Laurie’s best friend, he is perfect and is who she turns to when she needs someone to talk to. He’s so perfect because Laurie made him up. But when Neon shows up in real life, he changes everything for her. Neon shows Laurie what it means to be real.

When I first read the blurb on the back of this book, I thought it would be a lot more romancey – the first line is “Neon is Laurie’s first kiss”. I’m not a big fan  of romance but the concept of the book drew me in anyway. I am so so glad that this book isnt very romancey. I love the friendship. It was such a good choice to go with. A Flash Of Neon talks so much about friendship: rekindling friendship, the awkwardness of a past friendship, friends who aren’t as great as you deserve. It’s pretty amazing.

I enjoyed this book way more than I thought I would. I brought it for my commute to school and when I got home I had 20 pages left. Throughout the day I kept thinking to myself “is now an appropriate time to read?”. I couldnt get A Flash Of Neon out of my head.

The concept of the realm, especially the idea of the characters fading, loosing what they love and themselves over time really resonated with me. The thought of bringing to life and subsequently killing them is a lot to think about. The blanks were also terrifying to think about, them taking the imagination, creativity, empathy and memory’s from people is crazy. This whole book was really immersive and the imaginative characters made A Flash Of Neon really memorable.

Neon was such a great character, I love how funny and self sacrificing he is. I also loved how as time went on, Laurie started to notice more and more human things about him as he became his own person.

The ending of this book is also so sweet. I loved the idea they came up with to solve Neon’s problem and remaining guilt.
