Interview with Amy Clarkin

1. What is your latest book about?

My latest book, is a YA novel, Who Watches This Place, and it is the second PSI investigation. PSI (Paranormal Surveyance Ireland) are a team of ghost hunters in Ireland, who are investigating afancy new start-up for a haunting while dealing with their own personal issues: Raven and Éabha are clashing over Raven’s new clairvoyant abilities, Fionn is feeling left out by the rest of the team and Davis is dealing with a journalist determined to prove they’re all frauds. When one of the team disappears during the investigation, the others need to come together to save them… if it’s not too late.

2. Which one of characters was the hardest to write?

Adrian, the ghost! I want my ghosts to feel real, to have believable backstories and motivations while still being incredibly spooky, so figuring out who he is and what he wants is a challenge. Once I figured him out I had a lot of fun with him though – I enjoy writing a villain!

3. One of the things that PSI struggles with in Who Watches This Place is people not believing in their experiences. Do you believe that ghosts or other paranormal happenings exist?

I think I do. I don’t know how to explain them, but I think there’s too many stories from so many people all over the world to believe that there isn’t anything out there. And you definitely wouldn’t catch me going into a haunted house at night… just in case.I’ve spent far too much time on ghost story TikTokfor that!

4. What is the worst thing you ever did (or have considered doing)to one of your characters?

I felt awful about the conflict between Fionn and Archer in WWTP, I love Fionn so much and I felt so bad about how hurt and upset he was. I’ve also contemplating killing off two different characters, (one of them made my very close friend extremelymad at me when I floated the idea!) but they’re currently safe. For now…

5. If you were stranded on a desert island what 2 books, 2 movies and 2 animals would you bring?

Oh this is SUCH a tough question, I love it! OK, the two books I’d choose are The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern and Imogen, Obviously by Becky Albertalli. The movies are What We Do In the Shadows and Moana (though I might get very jealous of her boat). The animals I’d bring are a horse because I love them and I could gallop around the island, and a chicken because I find them entertaining and then I’d have eggs!
